FISH-FIT – Virtual Workshop

The control of seafood authenticity is an important prerequisite to combat illegal fishing, consumer deception and food fraud, which represent a serious risk to the economic development of the marine sector in the North Atlantic region. The verification of the correct and mandatory labeling of seafood products in accordance with the European regulations is commonly carried out in control institutions using DNA-based methods.

Within the European Interreg Atlantic Area project “SEATRACES: Smart Traceability and Labeling ToolBox for a Sustainable Seafood Production”, a new online tool FISH-FIT is developed to support EU control laboratories and institutions in seafood authenticity testing. The tool was planned by the Max Rubner-Institut (MRI), the German Federal Research Institute of Nutrition and Food, as work package leader in close cooperation with the SEATRACES consortium.

In this workshop current issues on the European control of seafood authenticity are discussed and the new online tools FISH-FIT as well as the communication platform SeaTraceNet are presented for stakeholders in seafood authenticity.
