The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in collaboration with Identigen has developed a scanning tool based on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology to check that the ingredients indicated in the label correspond with those actually determined in the food. The technology used provides the capacity to detect the presence of undeclared species. In the released report, FSAI evaluated the potential of NGS to identify species in plant-based foods and food supplements from health food stores. In the future, the FSAI intends to apply the same technology to scan meat, poultry and fish products.
